Open Command Window Here

Posted by MV as Insights, Softwares

Open Command Window HereI often find myself compiling Java codes within command prompt (MS DOS) and it’s quite a hassle to change directories all the way to the specific folder I’m working on. I don’t rely much on any Java IDEs’ on-the-fly compile and run feature because I want to see the errors from the compiler itself. In addition, I get used so much to “ls” command in Solaris and Linux that I am so disturbed typing “dir” in MS DOS. If there’s any tool to convert the native MS DOS command line interface into Linux console I would have converted mine already.

Anyway, this little program from Microsoft PowerToys adds an “Open Command Window Here” context menu option on file system folders, giving you a quick way to open a command window (cmd.exe) pointing at the selected folder. When you installed this, you’ll have an instant access inside the folder where you are compiling. :)

Open Command Window Here has been around for quite long and I find it very useful. Oddly, it is not installed in Windows by default even if it is so small. You have to download it separately. I really wonder why… Perhaps majority of Windows user don’t even care about MS DOS anymore?

Legal Guide for Bloggers

Posted by MV as Insights, Websites

Keep on Blogging!I’m not very fond of politics but it is inevitable to get involved. If you just sit around and watch everything, you’ll find yourself speechless and that is something you don’t want to happen. Eventually you’ll be dealing with political issues not only in your community, but also in a broader perspective. As blogger you can write virtually about anything. Free speech does not come freely. It may sound odd but I also believe in equivalent trade in a certain extent. If you want to speak freely then you should know your boundaries. More importantly, you should know your rights.

My friend wrote his opinion about EFF’s campaign and they are all valid. Our class in ethics deals heavily with privacy issue and EFF is one of the frontier in defending freedom in the internet. All bloggers are encouraged to know about their rights. So what are you waiting for? Read it!

Java IDEs Strike Back

Posted by MV as Insights, Softwares, Technology

Last week, Microsoft offered free downloads of Visual Studio 2005 Express for one whole year, which is until Nov 6, 2006. On the same week Sun Microsystems offered Sun Developer Network members two free fully-licensed IDEs namely Java Studio Creator ($99 value) and Java Studio Enterprise ($1,895 value)! This was announced in JavaOne Tokyo. Joining Sun Developer Network is free as well so I seized the opportunity to get a hands-on experience with these Java IDEs.

If only Microsoft would release Visual Studio 2005 Team System for free, that would be amazing. But it is very unlikely to happen. Right now the only free IDE from Microsoft is the Express editions of Visual Studio 2005. You have to pay the license for higher-tier editions. Sun’s offering is way too generous that they have given away two IDEs costing about $2000! If you’re a Java developer, download the IDEs now. If you’re studying Java, like me, then you should never let these free tools pass you by.
